"The Fast and Furious"
Directed By: Rob Cohen
Starring: Vin Diesel
Writing credits: Gary Scott Thompson (based on an article by Ken Li)

Leaving another stain on the screen, grease monkey Vin Diesel heads up a surprisingly good cast of brow-furrowers in this quick and dirty action flick. This one was a sleeper hit when it came out this past summer, and no doubt itêll do well in rental and sales.

Problem is, I had heard a lot of good things before I saw this movie. Not that it is awful - itês just a little lacking. But what did I expect from a movie that, by the directorês admission, was toned down for the PG-13 audience?

Fluff that it is, you donêt necessarily have to check your brain at the door like most teen movies. Thereês certainly a compelling reason for watching depending on your fetish: guys, gals, fast cars, great stunts, etc. The story is ripped from about any "cop seeks redemption and/or wants to live up to dadês legacy" movie you want to pick. The worst thing I can say about this movie is that all the cops act like, well, a bunch of cops. One interesting note (to me) is that the house the police are all holed up in is the same one from "Hanging Up ," although in better condition. Damn I want that house!

As for DVD extras, well, there were supposed to be a ton of them. Iêd say the extras should be the legal minimum for any action flick. Donêt get me wrong, there are plenty, but all action-DVDês should have at least these. Highlights include a great section where final film edit is transitioned with storyboard drawings, 3D conceptual animations, blue-screen shots, and then final cut. Thatês a nice change from the pervasive split-screen or, worse, the angle-change vew (see different shots by hitting the angle button).

"The Godfather" DVD Box Set
Directed By: Francis Ford Coppola
Starring: Are you kidding me? You should know this by now!
Writing credits: Francis Ford Coppola

Whassamattayou? You think Iêm going to diss and dismiss one of the greatest film trilogies in history? Hell no! This is filmmaking at its best, all encapsulated in a very classy (if expensive) box set.

This is what DVD collections are supposed to be. Each film is incredibly transferred to the digital format, and there are plenty of great extras on an entire bonus DVD. The only thing more I could have asked for would be a soundtrack CD or poster signed by Coppola himself.

Now, as a special offer to Mangy Dog readers, Iêm going to give away a very special edition of this box set!!! Thatês right, you too can look cool with your own Godfather collection sitting on a shelf. If you want, Iêll even autograph it for you.*

To enter, send me an email at ozaca123@yahoo.com. The winner will be chosen thusly: best weird movie pick on DVD. Just send me a line about a really freaky movie youêve seen on DVD, something you might want me to review (hint, hint) and Iêll pick the best one!

*(Note - the box set is actually a rare promotional item. The DVDs are painted over and donêt actually work . . . however, you do look damn cool if you have them. And besides, itês free, so quitcher bitchinê - Ed.)
